After a few prayers, patience and trust we were blessed with being able to capture the magic of Deva Premal and Miten as Bed Time Storytellers.
We had made arrangements to film them both whilst in Australia, which seemed simple enough until the rains came, and they did indeed come at a force that eventually broke the Brisbane river. Our first recording session had to be cancelled as the rains had cut them off in the mountains, we tried again, driving up through the beautiful rainforest and again our hopes and plans were dashed as we met with a raging river torrent, chest deep, running through and cutting off the road.
Finally after another week, Mother Nature gave us a break, the road became passable and we were able to record with them ! Hooray !
This week we are covering Deva Premal’s story and Miten’s is following soon.
Deva tells the story of her life entwined with the Gayatri Mantra from before her birth, during her childhood and leading to her current path where she discovered her own voice.
The Gayatri Mantra
om bhur bhuvar svah
tat savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya dhimahi
dhiyo yonah prachodayat
Through the coming, going, and balance of life
The essential nature which illumines existence
is the adorable one
May all perceive through subtle intelligence the brilliance of enlightenment
Deva Premal was raised in an atmosphere of mantra and spiritual discipline, in sharp contrast to the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle of her musical and life partner Miten.
Born in Nürnberg, Germany in 1970 of a mystic/artist father and a musically talented mother, she was taught violin, piano and received voice training. By the time she was five years old, she was already chanting the Gayatri Mantra daily, and since that time she continues to integrate meditation into her life.
“I grew up singing mantras… The Gayatri Mantra as my good-night song… and chanting mantras while walking with my father… it was a familiar thing from early on. But it wasn’t until recording The Essence that I really found my voice. Until then, I was Miten’s back up singer!
“It was important for me to find my own voice and my own “song”… my own expression. The Gayatri Mantra opened this door for me.”
“Of course, my parents also have something to do with it, my mother being a musician (she plays the Viola da Gamba, an medieval version of the cello) and my father playing hand-drums ever since I was born. As a child I played piano and violin, but I always felt stuck in the rigidity of classical music, and the restriction of playing by notation. So it was a great release when Miten introduced me to a world of un-mapped music. What freedom!”
The Joy of Performing
Deva Premal travels the world with her partner Miten.
Their music transcends all the usual musical boundaries, with fans including rock icon Cher, who featured the Gayatri Mantra, on her Farewell Concert Tour; world renowned author and motivational coach Tony Robbins, and even His Holiness The Dalai Lama who, after hearing Deva & Miten sing for a private audience, exclaimed, “Beautiful music, beautiful…!” Best selling author Eckhart Tolle notes:
“As you listen to the music of Deva and Miten, the sacred space that lies beyond the mind emerges naturally and effortlessly. Pure magic.”
Deva notes ….
“The sound of clapping destroys the healing vibrations. This is really one of the main reasons Miten and I sing… to bathe in Silence. It’s our nourishment. It’s what keeps us on the road.
For me there is nothing more precious than having sung with an audience, ecstatic with bliss, and then entering the deep silence that the mantra brings… so deep, that with closed eyes you really feel there is ‘nobody’ there at all… all personalities dissolved for a tiny sacred moment. This is more rewarding for me than clapping… But… I don’t want to get too serious here!… sometimes the outbursts of clapping that happen in the concerts are so full of love, it’s almost overwhelming. So much gratitude and warmth!”
Among the numerous letters of appreciation she has received since the release of her albums, many describe how her music has been used to accompany and enhance the sacred passages of birth and death. In fact, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the world famous author of On Death And Dying, requested that Miten and Deva bring their music to accompany her passing. “We have played for many people, but to play personally for Elizabeth was something I will never forget.”
“I would love to see the mantras touching more and more people. They really are a healing force, and if ever the world needed them, it’s now.”
We are building a collection of inspirational, delightful and wise stories as a Gift of Love for the World’s Children. The project, when fully developed, will represent all cultures and languages and will be freely available via the internet to all. We also aim to have distribution through orphanages and into impoversihed areas through street cinema and other media.
